              backache; Causes and treatment.

Dr. Muhammad Akhtar Hanjra
(Physiotherapist)

"Pain" is actually the body's warning system aimed at protecting against further injury. It actually indicates that a wound has occurred inside or outside the body due to disease or ignorance. However, if the pain persists for a long time, it should be taken seriously and a doctor should be consulted.

The most common pain problem people are facing today is 'back pain'. The pain that occurs in the early part of life between 16 to 25 years is usually mechanical which is due to our ignorance, not sitting properly, sitting all day in office, long drive, uncomfortable bed and other reasons. While the other type of pain is the one that occurs due to degenerative changes in the back bones and the fullness of the bones in the last part of the age. This pain is called Spondylitus. Physiotherapy is the best treatment for both types of pain.

We have very few people who understand physiotherapy. However, back pain is the most expensive medical problem in European countries. About a quarter of patients there attribute their back pain to their work.

Thus, back pain gets cured by itself in many cases, but patients whose back pain does not get better, should not ignore this problem and should contact a physiotherapy center as soon as possible. Now in Pakistan also increasing number of physiotherapists are doing this work with special skills. It is the job of the physiotherapist to save the patient from back pain and muscle pain in the future and provide strength with new techniques. In the UK, physiotherapists are considered to be the only hope for back pain relief.

Various methods of physiotherapy are tried to treat back pain. Among which the exercise method is the most reliable. Apart from this, services are provided by modern machines including ultrasonic therapy, laser, tennis, biofeedback and traction and manual techniques to stretch the back tissue.

Physiotherapy emergency medical centers have reduced the rate of back pain patients by almost 40%. It is hoped that this rate will decrease further. Patients who were previously advised to undergo surgery now benefit significantly from two to four weeks of physiotherapy. It should be noted that the success rate of this method of treatment is 50 to 60 percent.

In fact, the correct diagnosis of the disease is a difficult and quite responsible task, in which it is necessary to diagnose the tissue under the painful area or in the tissue, due to which the pain is felt elsewhere. For example, if there is pain in the shins, it should not be assumed that the pain is only in the shins, but its correct diagnosis will be known only from the detailed history of the patient. Usually, a malfunction in the tissues and their external nerve cords or roots is attributed to the pain of the patients.

Finally, a few useful points... For patients who usually complain of back pain, such people

Take a brisk walk for at least half an hour in the morning.
If you want to lift something heavy, lift it while sitting.

People working in offices should never sit in one position for long.

Take a light walk around your office for two to three minutes after every hour.

Sit fully reclined in the chair. In the bedrooms of such patients, if the mirror or wash basin is set low enough, they should not bend their back to comb, wash their face or shave, but should work with their feet forward one step and get up with a crouch.
A commode should be used in the washroom, use of stairs should be minimized and sleeping on the floor should be avoided.
