The BMC has shortlisted a company managed by the wife of a tainted contractor for the construction of a flyover in Borivli.

The proposal for the Rs 116 crore project will be tabled before the standing committee for its final approval on Friday.

Last week, the Shiv Sena led standing committee had handed over a Rs 157 crore sewage project contract to the same company that had bid for both works after entering into joint ventures.

The BMC plans to construct the flyover that would connect the Borivli railway over bridge and land near Link Road at Borivli (West). The bridge will bypass the congested traffic signal of Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Chowk on S V Road and Kalpana Chawla Chowk.

The contractor must complete the work in 24 months, excluding the monsoon season.

The contractor is reportedly one of the accused in the Rs 900-crore road scam.

Opposition leader Ravi Raja has slammed the civic administration for allowing the contractor to get BMC works. He said, “Tainted contractors or their close family members should not be allowed to bid for BMC contracts. The BMC should come out with a clear policy on the issue. The BMC blacklisted the contractor for doing shoddy work in a road scam and he is facing police action. But the civic administration has allowed him to bid for new work through his wife’s company.”

Two years ago, a BMC probe had found that work on almost all road works done by contractors were shoddy. The civic authority subsequently filed a police case against nine contractors. It also barred them from participating in any future contracts. One of the contractors is said to have started a new company in his wife’s name.

Recently, this firm entered into a joint venture with another company and then bid for a contract to replace sewage connector lines at eight spots in the city. The contractor quoted 30% more than the estimated cost for the sewage micro-tunnelling project.

The standing committee approved the proposal last week. The company is shortlisted for the second contract of the Borivli road over bridge.
